Recommended Diet for Children With Hypoglycemia

Hypoglycemia is a blood sugar disorder characterized by low levels of blood glucose. Children with hypoglycemia must eat a carefully planned diet, in order to maintain stabilized blood glucose levels.
  1. Timing

    • Children with hypoglycemia need to eat frequent small meals, in order to maintain their blood sugar. It is recommended to eat a snack every two hours.

    Protein

    • Protein is an important part of a child's diet, when she has hypoglycemia. Nuts, and other healthy protein foods, help the hypoglycemic child prevent the blood sugar from going too low.

    Vegetables

    • Vegetables offer many nutrients, vitamins and minerals, and should be included in the diet of a hypoglycemic child.

    Fiber

    • Foods containing fiber, such as whole grain breads and long-grain brown rice, help to regulate absorption of sugar into the body. This helps to stabilize the blood sugar of a child with hypoglycemia.

    Sugar

    • Sugar and foods containing sugar, should be generally avoided in a child with hypoglycemia. Sugar causes a rapid rise in blood sugar, followed by a precipitous drop, which can be dangerous to someone with already low blood sugar levels.
