How to Relieve a Stuffy Nose in Children
Stuffy noses are a common childhood complaint. Sinusitis, or a swelling of the inner linings of the sinuses, is often part of the problem. Nasal congestion, according to the American Academy of Otolaryngology, has four identifiable causes: rhinitis, structural abnormalities, allergies and infection. Congestion is a nuisance that can affect children's sleep and may lead to grogginess. There are numerous methods to get the much-needed relief from the discomfort that comes with stuffiness.Things You'll Need

Stuffy Nose Remedies

1
Check for obstructions. Children often stick things in their noses, and the obstruction can mask itself as congestion. Check for any objects that may be in the nasal passageway, and seek medical attention if necessary.

2
Use a humidifier. A humidifier is a device that releases water vapor into the air, thus keeping moisture in the surrounding environment and helping to relieve the dryness associated with stuffy noses.

3
Give the child the appropriate dose of an over-the-counter nasal decongestant. Dr. Richard Marby, in a report on Mother Nature, advised that antihistamines should be used for "wet" symptoms, while nasal decongestants should be used for stuffiness.

4
Have the child drink lots of fluids. Fluids help thin the mucous and can relieve certain symptoms of a stuffy nose. Water and fruit juices are healthy choices.

5
Play with the child. According to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, moderate physical activity can have a positive impact on the immune system. Keep the child active with toys and games. It will likely help him forget his uncomfortable symptoms while keeping his body healthy.
