Symptoms of Severe Candida Overgrowth in Children

Candida albicans is a type of fungus that is normally present in the body in small amounts, but given the right situation it can overgrow and cause a condition called candidiasis. Children can develop an overgrowth of candida if they have chronic illnesses that lower their immune response or as infants before their immune systems are strong enough to prevent an overgrowth. According to the Mayo Clinic and the National Library of Medicine, symptoms of severe candida overgrowth in children include poor feeding and skin changes.
  1. Soreness

    • Candida overgrowth in the mouth and throat can cause swelling and soreness of the mouth, tongue and throat, making it painful to eat or swallow.

    Lesions

    • Lesions can form in the mouth, throat and tonsils of babies and children with candida overgrowth, which can bleed and become irritated from swallowing or chewing food.

    Poor Latch

    • Severe overgrowth of candida in a breastfeeding baby may make it difficult for the baby to latch onto the breast, which can lead to an inadequate intake of milk.

    Rashes

    • Overgrowth of candida on the skin of children can cause rashes that may be intensely itchy and can cause complications, including bacterial skin infections.

    Weight Loss

    • Babies and children with overgrowth of candida may experience weight loss or failure to thrive, which can be a life-threatening condition.

    Pain

    • If the candida spreads into the bloodstream of a child, it can cause intense pain throughout the body and may result in life-threatening complications.
