How Does Obesity Affect Children?

Childhood obesity is becoming more common. Children are spending less time being active and more time with television, computers and video games. Obesity can cause a variety of health and social issues. When a child loses weight, he will be healthier and can feel more confident in whom he is as an individual.
  1. Identification

    • One of the first indications a child may have a weight problem is through the body mass index (BMI). Your child's pediatrician can monitor her BMI to determine if her weight is normal for her age and gender.

    Health Issues

    • Studies are showing children who are overweight are more susceptible to type 2 diabetes. Heart conditions can develop. High blood pressure is becoming a risk factor. Children are having symptoms that overweight adults usually face.

    Physical Limitations

    • Being overweight can limit what a child can physically do during the day. It may be hard to participate properly in gym class. Extracurricular sports, such as track, baseball or basketball, can put stress on the body and heart of an obese child.

    Self Esteem

    • Children who are overweight suffer from issues of self esteem. They may try unhealthy ways to lose weight, such as bulimia. The obese child may withdraw from friends and family.

    Social Development

    • Social development is important in childhood, so that a child can learn how to interact with others. A child who suffers from obesity may avoid social interaction. This can lead to mental development delays.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Involve the child in meal planning and proper nutritional eating habits. A fun exercise routine can be implemented, such as horseback riding or swimming. Replace stationary electronics with games that promote movement, such as the Wii.
