How to Eliminate Lice in Small Children

When we send our young children off to preschool or elementary school, we look forward to them bringing home news of their day. What we don't want them to bring home is head lice. Lice are parasitic insects that feed on blood; they are easily spread by one infected person to another. Sharing clothing and combs--along with being in close personal contact with an infected individual--can spread the parasites.

  Comb wet hair with a nit comb. This is a fine-toothed comb designed to remove the lice from wet hair. This is appropriate for small children, especially those under two years of age.

  Shampoo the hair with shampoo designed to kill lice, such as Rid or Nix. If the child is under two years of age, these products may not be safe to use. Check with your pediatrician and read the product labels carefully.

  Apply lotion designed to kill lice, which can be obtained at the pharmacy. This product may not be suitable for very young children. Check with your pediatrician and pharmacist before using.

  Rinse the hair with white vinegar after shampooing. Leave the vinegar on the hair for several minutes before combing.

  Wash all the contaminated items the child has come in contact with (such as hats, pillows, bedding, towels, and clothing items) in hot, soapy water. They should be dried on a high heat for at least twenty minutes, according to the Mayo Clinic.

  Wash all combs, brushes, barrettes, and toys. They should be washed in hot, soapy water that's at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit in temperature.

  Vacuum the furniture and floor. Dispose of the vacuum bag when finished. Thoroughly clean the vacuum itself.

  Seal all of the child's toys that you are unable to wash--such as stuffed animals--in a sealed plastic bag. Leave airtight for several weeks.
