How to Pack a Bloody Nose

Every child gets a bloody nose at least once in its lifetime. Knowing how to get the flow to stop and how to pack the nose can be life saving, especially in cases of hemophilia. If you cannot get the bleeding to stop you should consult a physician immediately.

How To Pack A Bloody Nose

  Pull a cotton ball apart so it is no longer a ball, but now two pieces of cotton. Roll each piece of cotton between your fingers until it becomes 2 small, hard balls.

  Cut the gauze into a 3-inch square. Now wrap the gauze around one of the hard cotton balls to make a small, round pill sized ball.

  Compress the ball between your fingers and gently press it into the nostril that is bleeding. Insert it only deep enough to get the outer edge of the cotton ball inside the nostril. In a case where both nostrils are bleeding, you will use both cotton balls, 1 on each side.

  Pinch the nose just below the bridge with a fair amount of pressure while holding the head slightly back. The chin should not be parallel with the floor. Keep the pinch on the nose for no less than 1 minute and the bleeding should stop.
