How to Give the Heimlich To a Child

Stand or kneel behind the child whether she is seated or standing.

Make a fist and with your thumb pointing upwards, place it below the child’s rib cage and above the waste.

Encircle the child’s waist, placing your other hand on top of your other fist.

Give a series of five quick and distinct inward and upward thrusts.

If the object is still lodged after one attempt, continue process until it comes out.

If the child becomes unresponsive, call 911 and lay the child on the floor.

Bend his chin forward, ensure the tongue is not blocking the airway and complete a finger sweep of the mouth.

As the child lies on the floor, straddle the child’s thighs and place your fist between the bottom of the child’s breast bone and her navel.

Perform one quick compression by pushing inward and upward. Perform a finger sweep to ensure object is not in mouth. Continue this process until ambulance arrives or object is removed.
