How to Stop Your Children From Harming Themselves
Some children will choose to physically harm themselves in order to cope with unwanted issues. Self-harm may not be a gateway to suicide, but it is still a problem that requires attention. Parents will usually become frustrated not knowing how to deal with their children, and may have trouble finding the root of the cause. Your child could have a complex variety of emotions that he may not feel comfortable sharing with you, however with the right information you can still help him overcome this obstacle.Instructions

1
Approach the child in an open manner about the situation. Let him know that you are aware of what is going on, and that he will have your support and trust whenever he needs to talk.
-
2
Take away any sharp objects such as razors or scissors from his room. Objects that can be used to self-inflict harm should be unobtainable to children, no matter how frustrated or angry they may get with you.
-
3
Give your child a list of people who he can talk to when feeling the need to self-harm. Write their names along with their contact information such as email and telephone number so he can have a variety of ways to stay in contact.
-
4
Introduce him to a deep breathing exercise or relaxing meditation. Having him focus on breathing or meditating on a positive scenario can promote drastic changes that can alter his behavior for satisfaction.
-
5
Buy a journal for him to write in. Let him know that you or anyone else will never read it without his consent. This journal will allow him to express his feelings and emotions.
-
6
Suggest a milder, less dangerous alternative such as pinching, holding ice cubes or inflicting the pain by slapping a rubber band worn on his wrist. This should be done until he has fully grown out of the habit of self harming.
-
7
Convince him to exercise or pick up a sport. Most forms of exercise are an opportunity to release stressful issues and gain satisfaction in a physically healthy way.
-
8
Have him create a list of reasons on why he should stop cutting, and what he is going to do stop. Write a list of your own to show him how it affects the people who care about him.
