How to Make a Child-Proof Container

Child-proof containers aren't actually child-proof, they are child-resistant. To be labeled child-resistant, products must be too difficult to open be a majority of children under age 5. Some children are still able to get into the containers. The best way to keep children out of cleaning products, medicines and other containers which hold harmful items is to keep the containers where children can't get to them. Keep items on high shelves, or in locked cabinets or padlocked boxes and keep the key in a safe place.

Instructions

    • 1

Place potentially harmful items on high shelves. Children can be resourceful, so the shelves must be high enough that they can't be reached if the child climbs on a chair or cabinet.

    • 2

Lock up potentially harmful items. Put cleaning products or medicines in a locked cabinet, box or trunk and keep the key where it can't be found.

    • 3

Install padlock latches on unlocked doors. Cabinets or trunks which do not have key locks can be fitted for padlocks. Purchase a padlock latch at any hardware store and follow the installation instructions.

    • 4

Keep medicines in the child-resistant bottles. Do not put them in easy-open bottles. If the container is easier for you to open, it is also easier for your child to open.
