How do I tell a 3 year old his grandad has died?
- Be direct and honest. Tell your child that their grandfather has died in a simple way that they can understand. “Grandad is dead. His heart stopped beating and now he can't breathe anymore. He is still with us in our hearts, but we won’t be able to see him or talk to him on the phone anymore.”
- Allow them to express their emotions. Let them know it’s okay to feel sad, angry, or confused. Tell them that you are sad too and that you will be there for them.
- Answer their questions honestly. If they have any questions about death, answer them as honestly as you can. Keep explanations simple and appropriate to their age.
- Reassure them they are not alone. Let them know they have family and friends who love them and are taking care of them.
- Be patient. Grieving takes time, so be patient with them. Give them time and support to process their emotions and adjust to the new reality without their grandad.
