Medicaid Eligibility Rules in Alabama

Medicaid originated to help those who cannot otherwise afford health insurance. In Alabama it covers the health needs of the elderly, disabled and families who are in financial need of assistance. Four state agencies decide if a person meets eligibility requirements and that decision depends on several factors. Should the agencies determine that an individual or family is eligible, they will then need to go through an application process.

• The first eligibility requirement for Medicaid in Alabama is that the applicant legally resides in the state. People who have just moved and do not have any proof of their residency are ineligible.

• All applicants must legally reside in the U.S. or be a citizen. Illegal aliens are not eligible for any type of state aid.

• Applicants must meet the age requirements and have an income that is within 133 percent of federal poverty level. Applicants must show birth certificates and check stubs.

• Anyone who is applying due to a pregnancy must submit some form of medical documentation affirming the fact. This paperwork can be obtained by any licensed physician.
