Medical Welfare Benefits

Medical welfare benefits offer low-income families a way to obtain medical, dental and vision care with little or no money out of their pockets. Programs and eligibility requirements vary from state to state. To find out if your family qualifies for medical welfare benefits, contact your state's department of welfare.

Medical Benefits

• The government offers programs that target the medical needs of individuals and families. The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was established to ensure that low-income children get adequate health care. Medicaid is a government program set up to help low-income households obtain health insurance at no cost or with a low co-pay. Medicare is health insurance for people age 65 or older or anyone with end stage renal disease.

Prescription Drug Coverage

• Depending on eligibility and state requirements, most adults and children covered by a state- or government-funded health insurance program will also have prescription drug coverage. This covers many medication needs with little or no co-pay. Medicare offers drug programs that assist in paying for prescription drugs; these programs fall under Medicare Part D.

Dental Coverage

• Through state- or government-funded health insurance programs, you may be eligible for dental coverage. If children are eligible for health insurance, they will also be eligible for dental coverage. Adults who meet certain requirements -- including but not limited to pregnancy, family size, basic needs and disabilities -- may also qualify for dental coverage. Dental insurance covers regular yearly checkups, dental cleanings and extractions.

Vision Coverage

• Depending on your state’s program, you may be eligible for full or partial vision coverage. Vision coverage provides you with a basic eye exam yearly and full or partial coverage for eye glasses or contacts. Any additional services added on that is not covered by the vision plan will be the responsibility of the patient to cover.

Immunizations

• The Vaccines for Children program provides immunization shots at little or no cost to children whose families are unable to pay. Contact the Department of Health in your state to find out when vaccinations are available to adults and children for free or at a low cost.
