What Are the Requirements to Qualify for Medicaid in Florida?
Medicaid is a government program that provides medical coverage for low-income individuals and families. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services sets the qualification requirements for Medicaid and the local government handles applications, determination of qualifications and distribution of services. The Agency for Health Care Administration administers Medicaid in Florida and eligibility is determined by the Department of Children and Families for individuals or the Social Security Administration for SSI recipients.-
Low Income
-
Families with children aged 18 and younger who have combined incomes and assets of less than $2,000 a month may qualify for Medicaid coverage. The family also must have an income less than the limits established in their city. Individuals who receive Temporary Cash Assistance may qualify for Medicaid even if they choose not to receive their TCA benefits. Families and caregivers can apply for child only Medicaid as long as the family meets the income requirements.
Pregnancy
-
Women who are pregnant or believe they are pregnant qualify for Medicaid coverage so that they can receive care at local clinics only. Women also may qualify for full coverage Medicaid throughout their pregnancy after it's verified.
Age or Disability
-
Individuals who are 65 or older or who have a disability qualify for Social Security Income related Medicaid coverage. Florida residents who qualify for Social Security Income or SSI automatically qualify for Medicaid through the Social Security Administration. These individuals can apply for both Social Security and Medicaid benefits with one application.
