About Student Health Insurance in Michigan

Students are eligible for student health insurance through some colleges and universities in Michigan. These health insurance policies are intended to make essential health care services accessible to students who are not covered under their family's health plans.
  1. Eligibility

    • Students enrolled in classes or between semesters, international students and graduate students generally are eligible for student health insurance. Some plans will also cover spouses, dependent children and students on approved medical leave.

    Benefits

    • Preferred provider student health insurance plans cover a portion of office visits, hospital care, emergency room services, outpatient mental health, prescription drugs and vision care. Participants also may have access to international health care services through their student health coverage.

    Coverage Periods

    • Coverage periods vary and may be for one or two semesters or terms. Annual policies also may be available depending on the specific plan and the student's enrollment status.

    Costs

    • As of August, 2010, costs for student health insurance range from $838 for a single student for one term to about $2,490 for a single student with annual coverage. Premiums increase with the number of dependents covered under the policy. Annual deductibles may apply.

    Enrollment Periods

    • Some plans, like the one at Michigan State University, have specific enrollment periods. If the enrollment period is missed, students will have to wait until the next open enrollment. Some plans, such as the ones offered at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, allow students to enroll at any time.

    Universities

    • The University of Michigan-Dearborn, Michigan State University and Michigan Tech are among Michigan universities offering student health insurance. Student health plans also may be purchased directly through insurance companies.
