Oklahoma Food Stamp Requirements

Families who meet certain poverty levels qualify for a federal aid program through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), made available statewide in Oklahoma. This form of assistance allows families to purchase nutritional meals benefiting the whole family.
  1. Income Requirements

    • Families meeting certain income requirements in Oklahoma are eligible for food stamp benefits. Individuals are eligible if they earn $1,174 or less each month, while a family of two can earn $1,579. Income allowances increase about $400 for each additional family member after that. A family of eight is allotted up to $4,010 monthly, for example, and if there are more than eight persons in the household, the state of Oklahoma allows an extra $406 to be added for each additional family member. Child support payments are counted as monthly income. Income requirements for the elderly and people with disabilities are lower.

    Citizenship Requirements

    • Applicants for SNAP must be a United States citizen or a legal alien. Restrictions apply for lawful permanent residents (LPR), who are not legal alien and by federal law are "barred" from food stamp benefits for the first five years as a LPR. Children are exempt from this stipulation.

    Asset Requirements

    • Asset limits to qualify for food stamp benefits differ, but generally, an Oklahoma household is allowed up to $2,000 in assets, which could include a home that is owned by the primary applicant. Vehicles are not treated as assets in qualifying for food stamp benefits.
