Degrees in Genetic Counseling
Genetic counselors are health care professionals with advanced training who may work with health care teams to provide clients with information and counseling on genetic testing and genetic disorders. If you are interested in becoming a genetic counselor, many college programs to prepare you for this career at the master's, PhD and graduate certificate level.-
Master's Programs

Many colleges and universities have master's degree programs in genetic counseling. You can apply for these programs with your GMAT test scores and undergraduate degrees in areas such as nursing, social work, biology or psychology. Some programs are specifically for nurses, but requirements are generally the same for non-nurses. The programs provide a background in biology, clinical genetics, population genetics, cytogenetics, molecular genetics, psychosocial theory, ethics and counseling theory. You will also be required to complete a clinical experience in a genetic center.
PhD Programs

PhD programs generally prepare genetic counselors for teaching and supervisory roles in genetic counseling. Some PhD programs allow you to apply directly from a bachelor's degree program. You will need your GMAT scores and must be able to prove proficiency in human biology and genetics. If your undergraduate background is not strong enough, you may be asked to complete a master's degree in genetic counseling first. PhD courses are similar to those in the master's program, with added courses in teaching theory and practice. Advanced clinical experience and some type of thesis or dissertation may be required for degree completion.
Graduate Certificate Programs

Graduate Certificate Programs in genetic counseling provide additional training for those who possess a graduate or post-graduate degree in a related health field. A certificate program provides coursework in genetics and genetic disorders, ethics and legal issues and professional practice. A Graduate Certificate in genetic counseling may be ideal for a nurse practitioner who would like to counsel clients on genetic disorders. Many of these certificate programs can be found online.
