Stopping Birth Control & Symptoms

Birth control pills and depo provera shots contain hormones that suppress ovulation and prevent pregnancy. These hormones may linger in a woman's system for a while after stopping the drugs. Also, some side effects may be experienced after stopping these forms of birth control.
  1. Menstrual Irregularities

    • After quitting birth control pills, many women experience menstrual irregularities. Their periods may be sporadic and may last briefly or longer than normal. It can take as long as two years for periods to become regular again.

    Infertility

    • Women who formerly took birth control pills may be infertile for a few months after stopping the pills. Women getting the depo provera shot may be infertile for nearly a year.

    Mood Changes

    • The hormonal changes that occur after stopping birth control pills may cause mood swings and depression.

    Acne

    • Some women find that acne subsides while taking birth control pills. However, when birth control pills are withdrawn, acne may reappear.

    Other Effects

    • Some women may experience bloating, breast pain and back pain after stopping birth control pills. Some women have report adverse affects such as nausea and fatigue when quitting the depo provera shot.
