How Does Birth Control Affect Women?

Birth control has been used for centuries to prevent pregnancy. With different methods available, including birth control pills and condoms, the risks of unwanted pregnancies are continuing to decrease.

History

• Birth control dates back to1500 b.c. when women used oils and honey as a barrier. Women also used items inserted to prevent pregnancy. Although condoms were the first modern-day birth control method, abstinence was and is still considered the best form of birth control.

Significance

• Using birth control helps with unwanted pregnancies and allows a couple to plan for their family. In doing this, they can have children when they are ready to be parents. Condoms are also the only method that will protect against sexually transmitted diseases.

Function

• Preventing pregnancy is the main function of birth control. Other functions include regulating menstrual periods, controlling ovarian cysts and preventing sexually transmitted diseases.

Effects on Women

• Chemical forms of birth control like the pill regulate a woman's hormones and prevent ovulation. Without an egg released during ovulation, there can be no fertilization. Birth control also thickens the cervical mucus, making it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus. Being on birth control allows a woman the freedom to enjoy herself sexually without having to worry about unplanned pregnancies.

Considerations

• A woman should decide which form of birth control is right for her. She will need to decide if it will be permanent or temporary. Also, the cost and convenience is another consideration.
