IVF Side Effects

In vitro fertilization is a medical procedure in which a woman's egg and a man's sperm are united in a laboratory and then placed in the uterus in hopes of achieving pregnancy. Each phase of IVF treatment may cause side effects.
  1. The Initial Phase

    • According to SharedJourney.com, the initial phase of your IVF treatment is intended to suppress your menstrual cycle with medication, enabling your doctor to stimulate ovulation later. Symptoms include mood swings, hot flashes and headaches.

    Stimulating Ovulation

    • The next phase involves medication to stimulate ovulation. Lupron is commonly used to encourage increased egg production and may cause irritation at the site of injection, headaches, mood swings, fatigue and hot flashes.

    The Retrieval Process

    • Retrieval is completed by inserting a needle through the top area of your vagina, commonly causing mild cramping afterward. You will likely take antibiotics (like tetracycline or keflex) to minimize infection risk, causing side effects like upset stomach or allergic reaction.

    Medication Side Effects

    • Gonadotropins encourage egg growth and may cause a full sensation in your abdomen, mood swings and ovarian discomfort. HCG is a hormone given once your eggs are ready to be released and may cause side effects such as soreness at the injection site or discomfort in your ovaries.

    Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome

    • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome can occasionally occur. Symptoms include abdominal pain and swelling, vomiting, nausea, diminished urination, shortness of breath and abnormally fast weight gain.
