How to Deal With a Pavement Scrape

A scrape from pavement can hurt a lot, and extra care needs to be taken as it may leave little pieces of rock and dirt in the wound. Cleaning the wound often seems painful but is necessary. You might be tempted to cover the scrape with antibiotic ointment and a bandage, and wait for it to heal. This will cause more pain in the end as an infection may develp. Although the process can be painful, the only way to prevent infection is to clean the wound thoroughly and keep it clean until it can heal itself.

Instructions

    • 1

Allow the bleeding to stop. Most scrapes stop bleeding on their own. Apply light pressure with a warm, wet cloth if necessary.

    • 2

Clean the wound and the area around it with warm water and soap. Never scrub a wound as this can irritate it. Use strong water pressure if necessary to clean out the wound.

    • 3

Use tweezers to lift out pebbles and other debris, but do not dig into the wound. Visit a doctor if you cannot remove all the debris by washing and using tweezers, since debris can cause infection and scarring.

    • 4

Cover the scrape with antibiotic ointment and a bandage. Change the dressing daily or if it becomes wet.
