How Can We Keep a J-Tube From Clogging?

A jejunostomy tube (J-tube) is a tube that is surgically implanted into the jejunum of the small intestine. The tube can be used for feeding purposes for individuals with problems swallowing. It can also be used to deliver liquid medications. Routine J-tube care includes flushing the tube with water to prevent the tube from clogging. Through normal use, the tube occasionally can become clogged with particles from the feeding or medications. It is important to unclog the J-tube the first instance it is noticed the tube may be getting clogged.
