How to Discourage Birds From Roosting in a Garage
Birds that decide to nest in your garage can become a nuisance. Their droppings can trigger respiratory problems, and the nests can be a fire hazard and attract parasites and insects. Federal laws protect nesting birds, so preventing birds from building their nests in your garage in the first place is the most effective means of getting rid of the problem.Things You'll Need
- Porcupine strips
- Wire screening
- Bird distress call player
- Reflective tape or helium-filled balloons
- Hawk or owl decoy

1
Place porcupine strips in areas where birds like to roost. These stainless-steel barricade spikes prevent birds from perching on ledges and rafters.
-
2
Close garage windows or fit them with screens. Close the garage door immediately after use. Place wire screening over any additional openings in your garage.
-
3
Play bird distress calls to scare away birds. An electronic bird repelling device can target various bird species. Set the electronic bird repelling device to play distress calls made by birds similar to those frequenting your garage. The distress calls warn birds that there is danger ahead. Move the distress call repelling device to different locations periodically to make the scare tactic more effective.

4
Install visual devices to disperse birds. Hang reflective tape or helium-filled balloons in the garage, or place a hawk or owl decoy in a garage window or on the roof to scare birds away.
-
5
Consider getting a dog and train it to chase away birds from your property. If birds cannot get near your property, they cannot get into your garage.
