How to Reshape a Superiority Attitude

When you have an arrogant attitude and feel a sense of superiority over others, it alienates you from loved ones and good friends, and this may lead to loneliness. Arrogance also keeps you from learning because as long as you think you have all the answers, you won't be able to understand others' points of view, which may benefit you in the long run. Finally, having a superior attitude can cause you to excuse harmful actions you may commit toward others because you feel that the individuals deserved those actions. Reshaping your attitude can improve your emotional health as well as your relationships with others.

Realize that you are not perfect. Perhaps you feel superior to your siblings because they are single parents. But if you have been divorced, even though you have no children, you should acknowledge your own imperfections which contributed to the divorce. Then apologize to your siblings for your arrogant attitude and help them with their children.

Develop a teachable attitude. Perhaps your parents have offered you advice on how to behave on the job but you have ignored them because they never worked in the corporate world. Acknowledge that even though they never worked in a corporate environment, they still have years of practical experience. You can learn a lot from them about having a good work ethic.

Increase your compassion and service toward those you feel superior to. If you have been critical toward people who work in low-paying jobs, such as cashiers, janitors, restaurant cooks, waiters and waitresses, understand that these people work just as hard as you do. Respect them by talking to them in a nice manner and let them know you appreciate their services.
