How to Calibrate a Fixed Stadiometer

A fixed stadiometer is a wall-mounted height measurement device found in doctors' offices, among other places. When a doctor checks someone's height, she measures it with a stadiometer. The subject stands against the wall, and a sliding headpiece is lowered to the head. The doctor can then see the height by looking at the viewing window on the vertical measurement bar. It isn't a complicated device, but it does need to be calibrated before use and regularly thereafter.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the calibration rod on the base of the stadiometer and stand it straight. The stadiometer should come with its own calibration rod. The height will be marked on the calibration bar.

    • 2

Bring the headpiece down until it touches the top of the calibration bar.

    • 3

Look at the measuring tape that runs along the length of the stadiometer. The measuring tape value should match the length of the calibration rod. If it doesn't, proceed to the next step.

    • 4

Use the knob at the side of the sighting window on the measuring strip to loosen the window. Move the window up or down until the value in the window matches the calibration rod.

    • 5

Tighten the knob to secure the sighting window.
