How to Bathe With a Cast on Your Leg

Plaster casts for broken limbs work only if they are kept dry. Bathing with a leg cast can be difficult because the affected leg should be kept out of the moisture of the shower or bath by balancing with one leg outside the shower or hanging the casted leg over the side of the bathtub. Drug stores provide several different cast covers that fit over the cast and provide water-tight protection. If you do not have access to one of these store-made products, however, you may resort to an alternative, homemade method.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull one of the garbage bags over your entire cast and tuck the top of the bag into the cast.

    • 2
Temporary contact with medical tape shouldn't irritate the skin.

Tape the skin above the cast to the plastic garbage bag using medical tape, sealing all the way around the leg.

    • 3

Place the second plastic garbage bag over the first one.

    • 4
Duct tape is used to further secure the seal.

Use the duct tape to create a water-tight seal between bag and skin. Place the duct tape over the existing medical tape.
