Laser Treatment for Pimples
Acne is a medical condition of the skin that is commonly referred to as pimples. Most individuals develop the condition due to changes in the skin during puberty. Often they can keep the condition under control with products available over-the-counter and do not need medical attention. Some individuals are affected by the condition to such an extent that they require medical attention and treatment.-
Tackling Acne
-
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), laser treatment for acne should be used in conjunction with other treatment; such as the application of medicine directly to the skin. Laser or light treatment alone rarely cures acne. It is best used as part of an overall medical treatment plan.
When Laser is Recommended
-
The AAD recommends that you consult with a board-certified dermatologist prior to undergoing laser or light treatment. If an acne condition cannot be managed with over-the-counter products and medication prescribed by a physician, you may be a candidate for laser treatment. Laser therapy may deliver results where other types of treatment were ineffective. One benefit of laser treatment is that it may help some avoid the harsh side effects of the acne medication.
Laser Therapy at Work
-
The Mayo clinic recognizes several types of laser and light therapy for the treatment of acne. These methods of treatment can reach otherwise inaccessible layers of skin, while causing little harm to the skin's surface. Some laser technologies impact the oil producing glands causing them to produce less oil, and others attack the bacteria that causes the visible skin inflammation.
Things to Keep in Mind
-
While laser and light therapy can be an effective treatment for certain individuals with acne, it has its drawbacks. According to the Mayo Clinic, as of July 2011, physicians cannot yet identify in advance those who are most likely to benefit from laser treatment, while the AAD calls results unpredictable. According to the AAD, results tend to be temporary and you may need a series of treatments to get the best results.
