What Is a Devo Scooter?
Devo is a name given to electric-powered mobility aid scooters used by people with limited ability to get around on their own. A big step up from a wheelchair, they offer disabled individuals a taste of freedom with ease and maneuverability. There are different types of devo scooters for different types of use. The one you choose depends largely on where you would like to go with it, in terms of its compactness and the type of terrain over which it will need to perform.-
Power
-
Electric scooters run on battery power. They utilize deep-cycle batteries. The batteries are recharged either by internal chargers or with the use of an external battery charger. Often the batteries are extra when purchasing a devo scooter; however, if an external charger is required it is often packaged with the battery. The use of batteries makes them lighter and more easily transported in a vehicle for use in places other than the home.
Appearance
-
Devo scooters all share the same basic design, although individual features identify one brand from another. The seat is chair-like and positioned at the rear of the unit with a flat floor space for placing your feet in front of it. The handlebars rise up at the front of the unit. The battery is usually housed beneath the seat. They may even come equipped with a basket for carrying things.
Wheels
-
Available in three- and four-wheeled designs, the number of wheels depends largely on your intended use for the scooter. Indoor scooters are usually three-wheeled and have a smaller turning radius and smaller wheels. They make it easy to get around in tight spaces. Four-wheeled versions sacrifice turning radius for a wider stability base and large wheels, ideal for uneven terrain. They are recommended for outdoor use.
Portability
-
Travel scooters are devo scooters that are quickly disassembled into three or four pieces for easy transport in a vehicle. They take up a minimal amount of space, and are easy to reassemble when you reach your destination. They are also ideal for indoor use, as they are usually three-wheeled and offer higher maneuverability.
