Chemical Free Nit Removal

Head lice is a common problem among school aged children. Head lice are little, hard to see bugs that live in the hair on the scalp and, like fleas, feed on blood. These lice bugs lay eggs, also known as nits, and can be challenging to remove. Lice shampoos that kill the lice bugs and nits are full of pesticides, which can enter the bloodstream when placed on the scalp. You can effectively remove lice from your child's head without special shampoos; the most important item you will need is a comb specifically made for head lice.

Instructions

    • 1

Wet lice infested hair with water. Wring any excess water out of the hair or towel-dry. If you do use a towel, immediately place the towel in the washing machine.

    • 2

Apply hair conditioner on the hair. Make sure the hair is covered entirely; it's better to use too much conditioner than not enough.

    • 3

Part the hair using a plastic hair comb and clamp the hair into several sections using plastic hair clips. If the hair is long or thick, you will need to add more sections; however, if the hair is short, you will need fewer sections and fewer hair clips.

    • 4

Remove a clip from one section of hair and use a lice comb to remove bugs and nits from the hair. Keep combing the hair until you have removed all the bugs and nits. Rinse the comb with hot water after every comb through the hair. The conditioner will make the fine tooth lice comb slide through the hair easier. If the comb isn't sliding through the hair, apply more conditioner.

    • 5

Comb each section of hair until you have removed all the nits. This may take a few minutes or a few hours depending on the length and amount of nits in the hair. Dispose of the lice comb or sanitize the clips and combs with bleach to kill any remaining bugs.
