How do I Hook Up a Burett IV Fluid Pump?
A burette is a secondary IV line that is attached to a primary fluid bag and is used mainly in pediatric situations or for treatments that require a smaller volume. Its main purpose is to supply a calibrated amount of fluid therapy without overloading the patient, which can cause serious problems. They generally range from 50 to 150ml, and medication can be injected directly into the burette through its injection port for very accurate infusion volume. Like most IV lines, a burette line can be hooked into infusion/volumetric pumps for more infusion control.Things You'll Need

1
Wearing sterile gloves, connect the burette line spike tube into the main IV bag. Open the roller and fill the chamber about half full.
-
2
Prime the IV line by clearing out any bubbles and advancing fluid to the bottom until it is dripping out. Close the line and prepare to connect it to the pump. If not done already, start an IV on the patient and and connect the burette line to the IV port with the tubing accessible to the pump.

Follow the instructions for the particular model and brand of the pump. Be sure to only use same brand and model equipment for the pump you are using. Once the line is loaded in the pump and the rate and volume are set, open the line and make sure there is desired flow in the drip chamber.
-
4
Check up on the line as much as possible to ensure the pump is working correctly. If a problem should occur, remove the line from the pump and ensure the patient is OK. Document and report the issue to the product engineer.
