How to Convert an Eyeglass Prescription to a Contact Lens Prescription

Contact lenses are another option for those who wear prescription eye glasses. However, not every person can or should wear contacts. Depending on your specific eye shape, size and what condition your prescription is for, you may or may not be able to switch to contacts. Your ability to switch from prescription eye glasses to prescription contacts will be determined by you and your optometrist or ophthalmologist.

Instructions

    • 1

Call to schedule an appointment with your current eye doctor. If you no longer see your original prescribing doctor, ask your friends or family members for recommendations for a new doctor.

    • 2

Consult with the optometrist or ophthalmologist about switching to prescription contact lenses. The doctor will examine your eyes and determine whether you are a good candidate for contacts.

    • 3

Try on a pair of contacts. You will be asked to try on a pair of contacts while in the office. This is done to make sure the lenses fit correctly and comfortably. The doctor will also ask you to take them out and possibly put them back in to ensure that you are able to remove them and put them in without help. Many people have trouble with contact lenses because touching their eyes is difficult for them.

Listen carefully as the doctor goes over the care and maintenance of your new contact lenses. Contacts actually touch your eyes and are capable of causing infections, making it very important that you know how to take proper care of them.
