Should I Run My Dehumidifier Continuously or Intermittently?

Dehumidifiers are used to control mold growth in areas of the home that are more susceptible to dampness. They also remove excess humidity from a room replacing the dampness with warm dry air. Dehumidifiers do not function well at lower temperatures under 65 degrees. As the external air temperature drops you run the risk of freezing coils.
  1. Temperature

    • Continuous use of a dehumidifier will be determined upon where you live. The temperature changes will help define the need to use a dehumidifier year-round. If you live in colder climates, where the temperature drops dramatically during the winter months, the amount of moisture that drifts through basement floors and walls will drop, and the need for de-humidification will decrease. Living in more temperate zones, where there is not a need for a heated basement, you may have to run the dehumidifier year-round

    Intermediate

    • The need for a dehumidifier can be determined if there is noticeable excessive moisture in the air, a muggy feeling, wet spots on the ceiling and walls, or condensation on windows. Use the dehumidifier to relieve the muggy feeling in the home and dry the air. If the unit has an air vent on the top then it can be placed against a wall, if not then it should be placed in an open area to allow for circulation. Units will stop automatically when the ill tank has reached its capacity

    Benefits

    • Excess moisture in the home can facilitate the growth of mold and dust mites, which can provoke allergies and aggregate asthma. Continuous use of a dehumidifier will benefit those afflicted. The less mold and fungal spores and fewer house mites the healthier your home is. Save energy by using a dehumidifier, it takes less energy to warm or cool dry air than damp humid air.
