How to Make a Blue Ice Pack

Soothe an ache or reduce the swelling of an injury effectively with an ice pack. Instead of spending money on a ready-made blue ice pack, however, make your own at home. Making a blue ice pack is a relatively simple procedure which requires a few household items and just a few minutes to accomplish.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Zipper-closure Bag

    • 1

Pour two parts water and one part alcohol into a pitcher and use a spoon to mix the solution. The alcohol in the solution will keep the water from freezing into a solid block and will allow the ice pack to easily bend around your joints.

    • 2

Pour blue dye or food coloring into the pitcher. The coloring will make the final product look nearly identical to the ice packs bought at the store. Add as much or as little coloring as you would like to achieve the color you want.

    • 3

Pour the mixture into a zipper-closure freezer bag and close the seal. Close the seal properly. Flip the bag upside down to see if the solution is properly contained. Label the bag as an ice pack and as non-consumable to avoid anyone using it for other purposes.

    • 4

Place the bag into the freezer until it is fully frozen. Take it out only when you need to use it and place it back into the fridge for reuse.

    Plastic Container

    • 5

Choose a flexible, blue plastic container with a thin wall. If you cannot find a blue container, use an opaque or clear container instead.

    • 6

Pour two parts water and one part rubbing alcohol into the container. Close the top tightly and shake the container vigorously until the water and alcohol have completely mixed. Add a blue dye or food coloring to the mixture if the container you've chosen is clear or opaque. Add the coloring until you reach the color you desire.

    • 7

Label the container as an ice pack and as non-consumable to avoid anyone using it for any other purpose. Place it in the freezer and wait until it completely freezes. Take it out only when you need to use it and place it back into the fridge for reuse.
