Sometimes people lose their pills and when they find them later, they need help identifying the pill. Other times, a concerned parent finds a pill in his or her child's possession and wants to know what it is. All pills on the U.S. market today have an imprint that can you help identify them. Several sources exist to aid you in identifying pills based on their physical description and any markings on them.

      Ask the federal Food and Drug Administration. The FDA has a division set up to help identify drugs. Contact the Division of Drug Information at [email protected] or call 1-888-463-6332. Provide a detailed description of the pill you are trying to identify. Color, size and shape are important descriptions to include. Provide any markings on the pill, such as letters or numbers. Also note whether the pill appears to coated or noncoated and if it is scored in half or quarters.

      Go online to a site such as the Drugs.com website (www.drugs.com/pill_identification.html) and enter the description of the pill. The website requires the user to agree to the terms and conditions of the site before allowing the user to access the database.

      Take the pill to a local pharmacist. The pharmacist should be able to identify the pill for you and give more information.
