Veterans Benefits Disability Compensation
Disability compensation is a tax-free benefit for veterans who have become disabled or chronically ill during their military service. As of 2010, veterans faced a decreasing number of hurdles to receiving benefits.-
Eligibility
-
Eligibility for disability compensation depends upon a service member's status. A service member may be eligible for compensation if he has been discharged under any status other than "dishonorable," and if he was on active duty or on leave at the time of his injury.
Time Frame
-
Ever since the Veterans Claims Adjudication Committee issued their "Report to Congress" in 1996, veterans can file a claim at any time after injury and still be eligible for compensation. Once a veteran has filed the claim, he might wait 40 days for Veterans Affairs (VA) to process the claim.
Compensation
-
The VA is responsible for issuing veterans' benefits and compensation. The amount of compensation any veteran will receive depends upon various factors, including number of dependents and disability rating. The VA website features a Compensation Rate Table that can help a service member anticipate the payment due him.
