Lens Tint Colors

What we perceive as light is actually a blend of different colors that are all synthesized by our eyes and brain. In some situations, however, the ability to filter colors out of the spectrum is beneficial. You can get lenses in a variety of tints. Each offers a different advantage, such as general protection from bright light to filtering out some colors for improved perception.
  1. Gray

    • The best lens tint for individuals looking for overall protection from glare in their glasses is gray. Gray tints are the most common lens colors. They transmit colors evenly through the lens without changing color values. Gray tints are ideal for bright sunny days and water sports because they block out bright sun rays. The gray color family includes smoky tints, gray tints and gray-green tints.

    Brown

    • Brown lenses are warmer in color tone than gray lenses. Brown or amber lenses are proficient at blocking out blue light found on cloudy days and are also useful on low-light days. Brown and amber lenses can improve contrast and depth perception as well as reducing glare. Brown lenses improve visual perception and contrast differentiation and are beneficial in sports such as tennis, golf and skiing. Lenses tinted in the brown family can help to highlight contrasts in green colors, making them beneficial on the golf course to help improve visual acuity.

    Yellow

    • Yellow tinted lenses can improve contrast, reduce glare and preserve sharpness. Yellow tinted lenses are also often helpful for driving in low-light conditions, fog or haze because they improve sight performance. The yellow helps to filter out blue light, making these lenses ideal for cloudy and low-light days and a favorite among hunters, pilots and tennis players. They also are a popular choice for night drivers, skiers, mountain bike riders and marksmen.

    Rose/Blue

    • Rose lens tints can help block blue light and improve contrast. Rose tints can also help boost road visibility.
