How to Give a Dog an Epsom Salt Bath

Most dog breeds need to empty their anal sacks when filled, in order to maintain good health. Although the dog will initiate the procedure itself through instinct, giving the dog’s posterior an Epsom salt bath can soften its posterior so that the sacks can be emptied naturally. The dog can be placed in a bathtub for this procedure.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the drain, and fill the bathtub with 3 inches of lukewarm water. Check the water’s temperature with your finger to make sure it is not hot.

    • 2

Add 10 tablespoons of Epsom salts to the water in the bathtub. Stir the mixture with your fingers to dissolve the salt.

    • 3

Sit the dog in the bathtub. Pet and praise the dog to keep it calm while sitting in the Epsom salt bath. Remove the dog from the bathtub and drain the water. Dry off the dog with a towel.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 1 to 3 six hours later, but don't dry it off this time.

    • 5

Wash the dog in the normal fashion, with your usual dog shampoo, so that it is clean and free of salt residue.
