The Advantages of a Coaxial Head on an Ophthalmoscope

When the human eye is observed, the pupil appears black, because the retina reflects very little light. In order to see the interior of the eye, a physician uses an instrument called an ophthalmoscope. In its basic form, it consists of a handle, an attached head, a concave mirror and a light. The physician views the eye by shining the light on the retina through a series of lenses and filters.

This is important because the path of the physician’s eye to the patient’s is extremely narrow. It uses a brighter halogen lamp than the standard, providing 30 percent greater illumination. It also utilizes a light trap, reducing the amount of light reflected back into the physician's eye. It also provides a shadow free view and easier entry into an undialated pupil.
