How to Wear High Heels During Pregnancy

You still want to look good during pregnancy, even though your body is changing. High heels are sometimes not recommended during pregnancy because being pregnant can disrupt your sense of balance, but you may not feel as attractive in flat shoes. High heels can also aggravate common discomforts of pregnancy, such as aching feet and back pain. However, you do not have to give up high heels entirely while pregnant. A bit of common sense and caution will allow you to continue walking tall throughout your pregnancy.

Instructions

Choose high heels with a moderate heel height. The American Podiatric Medical Association defines high heels as two inches or more; Patti Glick, R.N., told PregnancyandBaby.com that heels should be one inch or less. You may be able to wear heels a bit taller than that, but one inch, but avoid those five-inch stilettos.

Choose shoes with heels that have a wider base. These are more stable, making you less prone to falling or twisting your ankle. Avoid platform shoes, which present a greater risk for poor balance and foot and ankle injuries.

    • 3

Wear your high heels only for a limited time, such as for evenings out or while meeting clients at work. Change back into flat shoes after a few hours instead of wearing heels all day.
