What do you expect your first trimester of pregnancy?
Weeks 1-4
* Conception: The sperm fertilizes the egg, creating a zygote. The zygote then travels down the fallopian tube and implants in the lining of the uterus.
* Morning sickness: Most women experience morning sickness, which is nausea and vomiting, during the first trimester. Morning sickness usually starts around week 6 and peaks around week 8.
* Increased fatigue: You may feel very tired during the first trimester. This is due to the increased levels of progesterone in your body.
* Breast tenderness: Your breasts may become tender and swollen as they prepare for milk production.
* Frequent urination: You may need to urinate more often as your body produces more blood and fluids.
* Constipation: The increased levels of progesterone in your body can also slow down your digestion, leading to constipation.
* Mood swings: You may experience mood swings due to the hormonal changes in your body.
Weeks 5-8
* Rapid growth: Your baby will grow rapidly during these weeks. All of the major organs and body systems will begin to develop.
* Embryo to fetus: By the end of the eighth week, your baby will be referred to as a fetus.
* Heartbeat: You may be able to hear your baby's heartbeat with a Doppler ultrasound.
* Ultrasound: You may have an ultrasound during this time to confirm your pregnancy and check on your baby's development.
* Gender determination: You may be able to find out the gender of your baby during this time, if you choose to have an ultrasound.
Weeks 9-12
* Weight gain: You may start to gain weight during the third trimester.
* Show: You may experience a bloody discharge called "the show" as your cervix begins to dilate.
* Contractions: You may experience some mild contractions, called Braxton-Hicks contractions, as your body prepares for labor.
* Birth: Your baby will be born at the end of the third trimester, usually around 40 weeks of pregnancy.
Keep in mind that every pregnancy is different. Some women experience all of these symptoms, while others only experience a few. If you have any concerns about your pregnancy, talk to your doctor.
