Will a blood test show an ectopic pregnancy?
A blood test alone cannot definitely diagnose an ectopic pregnancy. Blood tests can measure the levels of a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is produced during pregnancy. While high levels of hCG can indicate pregnancy, they cannot determine the location of the pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, typically in the fallopian tubes. To diagnose an ectopic pregnancy, a combination of ultrasound imaging, physical examination, and medical history is necessary. An ultrasound can provide visual confirmation of the pregnancy's location, and a doctor can assess for signs and symptoms specific to ectopic pregnancy.
