How do people become pregnant?
Pregnancy occurs when a sperm fertilizes an egg. The process begins with the release of an egg from one of the woman's ovaries. This usually happens once a month during ovulation. The egg travels down the fallopian tube towards the uterus.
If a man ejaculates inside the woman's vagina during sex, the sperm will travel through the cervix and into the fallopian tube. If a sperm fertilizes the egg, the fertilized egg (now called an embryo) will continue to travel down the fallopian tube and eventually implant itself in the lining of the uterus. This is called implantation.
The embryo will then grow and develop into a fetus. The fetus will receive oxygen and nutrients from the mother through the placenta and umbilical cord. The fetus will also produce waste products that will be passed back to the mother through the placenta.
The fetus will continue to grow and develop in the uterus for about 40 weeks. At the end of this time, the mother will give birth to a baby.
Here are some additional details about the process of pregnancy:
* Fertilization: The egg is fertilized by a sperm when the sperm's nucleus enters the egg's nucleus. This usually happens in the fallopian tube.
* Implantation: The fertilized egg implants itself in the lining of the uterus about 6-12 days after fertilization.
* Embryonic development: The embryo develops into a fetus over the course of about 8 weeks.
* Fetal development: The fetus continues to grow and develop in the uterus for about 32 weeks.
* Birth: The mother gives birth to a baby at the end of pregnancy, which is usually about 40 weeks.
