Dangers of Testim

Testim is designed for men with abnormally low levels of testosterone, a steroid hormone. Testim is topically applied and has been shown to increase testosterone levels, which can help with sexual function, bone mass and other conditions such as depression. However, some dangerous side effects are associated with Testim.
  1. Risks to Children and Women

    • The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) warns users that some children have shown signs of early puberty when Testim is accidentally rubbed off on them. Children may grow pubic hair and behave aggressively. The FDA warns that women could develop acne or new body hair when exposed to the drug. The FDA lists ways to avoid this, including only applying Testim to areas covered by clothing, and by washing with soap and water thoroughly before skin to skin contact occurs.

    Breast Cancer

    • Testim is only recommended for use by men, because of the dangers to women. The FDA specifically warns that pregnant women should avoid all contact with Testim, because the drug may harm unborn or breastfeeding babies. No one with breast cancer, male or female, should be exposed to Testim.

    Enlarged Prostate

    • Testim can aggravate problems that already exist in users with enlarged prostate glands. The National Institutes of Health noted that increased PSA (prostate-specific antigens) counts were the most common side effect seen in the test group. The amount of a protein released by the prostate is measured in PSA tests, and the higher the levels, the greater the risk of cancer. Even if no prostate problems occur in Testim users, the drug still increases the risk of prostate cancer and could potentially lower a man's sperm count.

    Swelling of Ankles and Feet

    • Other possible dangers of Testim include swelling of the ankles, feet and other parts of the body. For patients who already suffer from kidney, heart and liver problems, this can lead to serious complications. Other concerns include swollen and painful breasts, blood clots and sleep apnea.

    Possible Drug Interactions

    • Like with almost every other medication, the FDA recommends speaking with your doctor about any other medication you're taking before using Testim.
