What Are the Functions of Male Testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone found in both males and females, though males produce testosterone in much greater quantity. Testosterone is primarily a sex hormone in men, but plays many roles throughout the body.
  1. Sex Drive

    • Testosterone is a key androgen in males, and is responsible for a man's libido, or sex drive.

    Physical Development

    • Testosterone is responsible for physical development in males, influencing the growth of muscles and bones. It is also responsible for development of the penis and testicles, and production of sperm.

    Voice

    • Testosterone is responsible for the deepening of the male's voice during puberty. During this transition, the male's voice may occasionally "crack," inadvertently jumping between higher and lower pitches.

    Energy

    • Testosterone is one of many factors that play a role in maintaining energy levels, and inadequate levels of testosterone may sometimes be responsible for decreased energy.

    Mood

    • Testosterone may also help keep a man's mood balanced and even. Chronically inadequate or excessive levels of testosterone can result in mood swings or instability.
