How to Correct Peyronie's Disease

Peyronie's disease is characterized by scar tissue that forms inside the penis. It causes the penis to bend when erect and can be painful. This condition can negatively impact your sex life and even prevent you from having sex. Treatment will depend on the severity of your condition.

Talk to your doctor about your options. If you are not experiencing any pain, the curve is minimal and you have no problem with sexual activity, treatment is not necessary. If you do need some sort of medical intervention, options are available. Your doctor can offer advice on the best course of action.

Consider penile injections if your curvature and pain are not severe and sexual activity is still possible. You will get several injections over the course of several months. Your doctor will give a local anesthetic during your treatments. Currently, three different drugs are used and your doctor will determine the most appropriate one for you. They include verapramil, interferon, and collagenases. These drugs all perform a similar function which is to disrupt collagen production and breakdown existing collagen in the penis. This helps reduce scar tissue and the accompanying pain.

Consider surgery if the curvature is severe and prevents sexual activity. Surgical procedures aim to shortening the unaffected side of the penis or lengthen the affected side. Both of these methods achieve a straighter erection but come with a risk of erectile dysfunction. Penile implants are another option and are usually used if you already have erectile dysfunction.
