What do men go through during puberty?

Physical changes:

* Increase in the size of the testicles: This is one of the first signs of puberty and begins at around age 11 or 12. The testicles will double or triple in size over the next few years.

* Penis growth: The penis will also grow longer and thicker during puberty. It may start to grow faster at around the same time that the testicles start to enlarge.

* Pubic hair: Pubic hair begins to grow in the genital area and spreads to the underarms and chest.

* Voice change: The voice becomes deeper and huskier as the larynx (voice box) grows larger.

* Muscle growth: Muscle mass increases overall throughout the body including: biceps, quads, hamstring and pectoralis.

* Skin changes: Changes in the skin include sweating, oily skin, acne/pimples, and body odor.

Emotional changes:

* Mood swings or emotional outbursts

*Increased independence; may question or challenge family roles and behaviors

*Increased risk-taking or thrill-seeking

*Greater interest in and sensitivity to the opposite sex as boys develop sexual orientation

*Concern with body changes due to physical changes including concerns with penis, testicle, or chest size compared with peers

*Heightened self-consciousness about appearance including skin conditions including acne or body blemishes

*Possible worry about sexual maturity, performance

*Feelings of anger and impatience. This may be an expression of inner struggles they don’t completely understand themselves

*Depression, anxiety

Social changes:

* More interest in spending time with friends of the same sex

* Developing romantic attachments

During puberty, men undergo significant physical, emotional, and social changes. This can be a confusing and challenging time for young men, but it is also a time of great growth and development. Boys need support and guidance from their parents, teachers, and other adults during this time.
