Forklifts are used to transport heavy loads across short distances, such as in a warehouse or on a construction site. According to BLR, about 100 workers are killed each year in forklift-related accidents. As a result there are strict guidelines in place to improve the safety of these useful machines. Learning and implementing these procedures is relatively simple to accomplish.

      Buckle Up. BLR says that one in four accidents are the result of a driver being thrown out when a forklift tips over. The simple act of fastening the seatbelt prevents this from occurring. The forklift frame will protect the driver.

      Prevent the aforementioned tipping problem by being aware of the maximum load for that particular forklift. Once you have this information it is a simple matter to refrain from overloading the machine.

      Obey the rules of the road. The driver should always be aware of his surroundings and exercise caution when vision is obstructed. In these cases, slow down and sound your horn to notify others that you are coming.
