How to Teach Our Kids the Power of Self-Compassion
1. Model self-compassion.* Talk to yourself in a kind and understanding way. When you make a mistake, apologize to yourself and forgive yourself. Don’t dwell on your mistakes or criticize yourself harshly.
* Take care of yourself physically and mentally. Make sure to get enough sleep, eat healthy foods, and exercise regularly. Take time to relax and de-stress.
* Be kind to others. When you see someone struggling, offer them your support. Help others without expecting anything in return.
2. Help your child to identify their strengths and weaknesses.
* Praise your child for their accomplishments. Be specific about what you admire about them.
* Help your child to understand their weaknesses. Don’t dwell on them, but help your child to learn from them.
* Encourage your child to challenge themselves. Help them to set realistic goals and to work towards them.
3. Teach your child to be mindful of their thoughts and feelings.
* Help your child to identify their thoughts and feelings. Ask them what they are thinking and feeling.
* Don’t judge your child’s thoughts and feelings. Let them know that it is okay to feel any emotion.
* Help your child to cope with difficult thoughts and feelings. Talk to them about what is going on and help them to find ways to cope.
4. Encourage your child to practice self-compassion.
* Help your child to come up with ways to be kind to themselves. This could include writing in a gratitude journal, taking time for reflection, or practicing positive affirmations.
* Remind your child that it is okay to make mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes. It’s what we do after we make a mistake that counts.
* Encourage your child to seek help when they need it. If your child is struggling with a difficult situation, encourage them to seek help from a trusted adult.
5. Be patient and supportive.
* It takes time to learn self-compassion. Be patient with your child and continue to support them.
* Model self-compassion and practice mindfulness. Show your child how you approach your mistakes with self-compassion, and encourage them to practice mindfulness exercises to understand their thoughts and emotions better.
* Create a supportive environment. Make sure your child feels loved and accepted, regardless of their mistakes or achievements.
