What is a neonatoligist?
A neonatologist is a medical doctor who specializes in the care of newborn babies, especially the ill or premature. Neonatologists are pediatricians who have received additional training in the care of newborns. They work in hospital newborn intensive care units (NICUs).
Neonatologists provide medical care to newborns who are born prematurely, have low birth weight, or have other medical problems. They diagnose and treat a variety of conditions, including:
* Respiratory problems, such as respiratory distress syndrome and apnea
* Heart problems, such as congenital heart defects
* Digestive problems, such as necrotizing enterocolitis
* Neurological problems, such as seizures and strokes
* Infections, such as sepsis and pneumonia
* Jaundice
* Metabolic disorders, such as hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia
Neonatologists also provide supportive care to newborns, such as:
* Providing nutrition through intravenous fluids or a feeding tube
* Monitoring vital signs, such as heart rate, breathing, and blood pressure
* Providing oxygen therapy
* Administering medications
* Providing comfort care, such as holding and rocking the baby
Neonatologists work closely with other members of the healthcare team, such as nurses, respiratory therapists, and social workers, to provide the best possible care for newborns.
