Ways to Take Care of the Frail Elderly
-
Food Preparation
-
Many frail elderly people can no longer cook for themselves; rectify this situation by offering to assist them. You can make simple meals a few nights a week, or help them select prepackaged items that can be prepared with ease. If you are doing so, be sure to check with their doctors to see if the elderly person has any special dietary restrictions or requirements.
Chores
-
Household chores, such as cleaning, washing, and lawn care, are difficult for the elderly, who are not as strong they once were. Offer to perform these tasks, or chip in to have them done professionally. Often, the elderly also need help fixing small things around the house, which they may be unable to see because of poor vision, or manually manipulate because of arthritis. Other conditions can make repair work difficult as well; offer to do repair-related tasks for your senior.
Errands
-
Your senior citizen may be unable to drive or carry grocery store bags to and from the store and house. Assist with these errands, if possible. Picking up medications, adaptive equipment or devices, or just going to the post office will be appreciated by your senior.
Spiritual Care
-
Many elderly people, especially those with chronic or terminal illnesses, would like spiritual guidance, but are reluctant to bring it up. If they can't leave the house easily, this makes attending their place of worship difficult. Bring spirituality home to your frail elderly person by asking members of the congregation or the congregation's leader to visit.
Medication
-
Medication regimens can be complex, and some seniors cannot manage them independently, especially if there are frequent changes. Help your senior divide medication up by days, and make reminders about the appropriate times to take them. This is best done as a weekly or bi-weekly activity.
Company
-
Sometimes, frail elderly people are lonely for company. Spend some time with them every week doing common activities, such as watching tv, listening to music or just talking.
