Techniques to Help the Elderly Overcome Their Fear of Falling
The consequences of a fall for the elderly can range from bruises to broken bones and immobilization. The fear of falling can therefore become overwhelming for them. Fear may stop the elderly individual from moving, going outside and enjoying life. Luckily, there are techniques, exercises and useful products that can help the elderly overcome their fear of falling and allow them to continue to enjoy their lives.-
Balance Training
-
Lack of balance is one of the main causes of falls for the elderly. The Department of Health and Human Services recommends for seniors to include balance training in their regular exercise program. A personal trainer or access to a gym facility with balance balls and other equipment can help. If these options are not readily available, then balance can be improved in the home with little to no equipment. Exercises such as putting one foot in front of the other, standing with both feet close together, standing on one foot at a time and walking in a narrow space all help to improve balance and confidence.
Yoga Therapy
-
Hatha yoga classes specifically for older adults provide increased flexibility and better balance with a minimum of strain or strength needed. A study conducted by Indiana University's Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation found the study participants reported a 6 percent decrease in the fear of falling after completing a 12-week course.
Home Products
-
Installing equipment such as fall alarms or emergency pull cords can help to reduce the fear of falling. Fall alarms are monitoring sensors placed throughout the home that alert emergency personnel or caretakers when an individual falls. These sensors can be placed everywhere from the bedroom to the bathroom. Other products, such as specialty designed floor cushions, can be purchased and placed in high-risk areas such as the bathroom to reduce the impact of a fall. Installing raised toilets and handlebars in the bathroom and bathtub can also greatly increase confidence and reduce the fear of falling.
Clothing Products
-
There are a variety of clothing products that can reduce the damage of a fall, as well as products that make dressing easier. Hip protectors are pads built into underwear or pants that absorb the shock of a fall and decrease injury. Dressing sticks can help the elderly with putting on pants or skirts, and shoe horns reduce the need to balance or bend over. These clothing aids can help keep an individual's balance under control and reduce the fear of falling.
